Incredible Opportunity for you to give Lovie's African Children a ticket out of a life of poverty and hopelessness. |
By: Cynthia Phillips
Most of us are familiar with the scripture found in II Timothy 2:15: "Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
I have the privilege of teaching in a charter school here in the Dallas area. Each day my purpose is to prepare children to become life-long learners. In particular, I love working with the "at risk" kids - those who struggle with school and often times view the school as the enemy. They are the "under-dogs" and they also make my job my pleasure.
Because our school is considered a public school, we have numerous tools available to us that allow our teachers to help struggling students - particularly those who struggle in reading. Once we recognize a child is not progressing in reading we take immediate measures to rectify the problem. It is a very high priority and for a very good reason.
We recognize that reading is essential. It affects every element of our lives each and every day. It also affects the above referenced scripture...how does one "study" if one can't read? How do you "hide the Word of God in your heart" if you can't read the Word of God?
In most areas of our country, literacy is taken very seriously. Both parents and teachers become very concerned when a child is a poor reader. Of course our educational system is not perfect, but we are still a blessed nation when it comes to the education of our children. In other words, our children, as a whole, are certainly not the "under-dogs" of the world.
This is not the case in countries such as Uganda and Rwanda. Education is the ticket out of a life of poverty and hopelessness. Reading is not a privilege. It is power. Power to overcome the most overwhelming odds.
God Loves Kids helps the "under-dogs" of the world. It is the passion and life-purpose of my mother-in-law, Lovie Phillips. And as we were enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers, Lovie shared with me an incredible opportunity to help ensure that "her kids" were given the golden ticket to the power of reading.
In short, this is the opportunity:
A couple of weeks ago Angelica, a teacher and a friend of the ministry contacted Lovie. For almost thirty years, her specialty has been reading intervention. She is trained and well practiced in one of the most respected reading intervention programs available (SRA). And did I mention that this particular reading intervention program is very, very expensive (as is most specialty programs)? And did I mention that this unyielding teacher has convinced the well-known publisher (McGraw-Hill) to use Lovie's orphanages as a research project? Yes, this publisher is willing to make available their specialty reading intervention program to all of God Loves Kids schools in Africa.
I cannot begin to place a dollar amount on what this is worth to the children in Uganda and Rwanda. Another company, Rod and Staff, are donating some additional materials that are Biblically based and will give the children a good foundation in the Word. And did I mention that the teacher is ready, willing and able to travel to the schools and train the teachers on how to use these programs? (She is even more willing now that her son and his family are moving to Uganda!)
The only catch? The publishing companies will not ship the materials overseas. God Loves Kids will need to come up with the funds to get the hundreds and hundreds of teacher and student materials into the hands of the schools. It won't be cheap or easy. Yet, those of you who know Lovie Phillips, know that she will get it done - for the sake of the children.
The materials need to be there by January 1st. The approximate cost will be $6000 to ship the materials. Yes, this is only the shipping cost. Just remember, however, that these materials are worth tens of thousands of dollars actually more than $26,000. They will and can help dictate the difference between a good reader and a poor reader. And more importantly, they offer a ticket of hope. Will you help Lovie make this miracle happen? She must take advantage of it now or lose this incredible opportunity.
It is urgent that she knows she will have the funds before the end of December. If she is assured that the funds are coming she can use some sponsorship funds to ship the books and replace the sponsorship funds during December before they are due to be sent for the care of the children. However, she will never use sponsorship funds for anything other than the care of the children unless she is positive they will be replaced before they are due.
Give Lovie a call right away and tell her how much you will send or better yet have her put it on your credit card. You may also go to the God Love's kids website to donate.
